A Houston restaurant owner creates a Yelp alternative, countering dubious reviews with insider knowledge

Open-forum websites like Yelp have become something of a scourge of restaurateurs and bar owners, and while food critics serve as an important voice in the industry, from Paul Petronella's perspective, there tends to be much more to any operation's daily goings-on than an outside source would notice.

"I saw a lot of hard work that was not being recognized," says Petronella, a Houston restaurant heir, owner/operator of Paulie's and OKRA council member. That frustration led him to create a sort of industry alternative: PaulFEEDS, a project two years in the making that launched its 2.0 version in mid-April.

The site has two components. One is a database of food industry community members' Twitter handles because, as Petronella explained to CultureMap, "In our industry, Twitter is essential. We're always on our feet, but it's easy to catch up on our phones for a few minutes during break time."

The second is a running list of featured professionals. Petronella started with Justin Vann, the former sommelier at Oxheart, and Tyler Horne, the marketing manager for Urban Harvest — innovative and hard-working people who he thought were largely overlooked. (In the months since the interview was conducted, Vann has been recognized by Food & Wine as one of the top sommeliers of 2013.)

Petronella's hope is that foodies, diners and other industry members alike will look to PaulFEEDS for more information about chefs, baristas, bartenders and more — details about their inspirations, their mentors, their equipment and preferred tools — to get a clearer picture of the overall culture. Though Houston and Texas are in tight focus during the site's infancy, he intends for it to eventually have a national reach.

"It developed because I wanted to see more professionals recognizing other professionals," says Petronella, who was encouraged in part by the strong ties within the Bayou City's young foodie generation.

"I'm not sure that anywhere else has the same community that Houston does," Petronella continues. He buys his beans from Greenway Coffee, which runs Blacksmith just down the street, and is working with the staff at Mockingbird Bistro — which outsiders might consider a rival just a handful of blocks away — set up a pasta machine.

Plus, there's OKRA, which serves as a unified voice of small business owners and gives back to Houston's nonprofits with its Charity Saloon.

"We have a lot of great stuff happening here," Petronella says. "At some point we decided to help each other rather than seeing each other as competitors."

San Francisco restaurant accuses Yelp of rigging reviews

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Looking for a new dinner spot? Yelp is probably one of the first websites you search. Type in "restaurants in San Francisco" and you get reviews for more than 5,000 places, including Bai Thong Thai in Hayes Valley. But the owners don't want you to pay attention to their Yelp listing. They say Yelp is rigging the rating to bully them into buying advertising. This isn't the first time someone has made these sorts of claims against Yelp.

Bai Thong Thai has been around for about 2.5 years. It has many four and five-star reviews, and many mention the business' high-profile fued with Yelp.

Salakjit Hagerty says friends and customers are supporting her after she took the unusual step of posting a sign in the window of her restaurant telling people to boycott Yelp. The owner claims good reviews were buried by bad ones after she declined to buy ads on Yelp.

"They try to ask me pay money a month if I need good reviews show up," Hagerty said.

Yelp strongly denies that, saying ratings and advertising are completely separate.

"You can go on Yelp and look at an advertiser's page and see that it has negative reviews because it's impossible to please everyone all the time, and you can also see non-advertisers with 5-star rating reviews," Yelp spokesperson Vince Sollitto said.

But the accusations are not new. 7 On Your Side consistently gets complaints like one saying "Happy clients... wrote nice reviews on Yelp that disappeared right after a sales person from Yelp tried to sell me advertisement." Store owner Joni Burton told ABC7 News it happened three years ago when she refused to buy ads.

"Strange reviews came up, negative reviews," Burton said.

Burton says even today, she is still doing battle with Yelp and can relate to Hagerty, who believes Bai Thong Thai is losing customers because of damaging feedback.

UC Berkeley professor Michael Anderson researched the impact of Yelp on restaurant demand during peak hours and his study found it does make a difference.

"If you went from, say, 3.5 stars to 4 on Yelp, you might go from selling out maybe say 40 percent of the time to 60 percent of the time," Anderson said.

According to Yelp, 100 million people used the website last month alone and lawsuits accusing the San Francisco-based company of extortion have all been dismissed.

"People trust the content and we would never do anything to jeopardize that trust," Sollitto said.

You've invested a large part of yourself and your money into developing a good idea and now you're seeing some fruits of your labor. Many business websites today live and die on information and the ability to collect it effectively is what can make all the difference. Whether your business is old or just an idea, there is no wrong time to start gathering data. It will take your business to the next level.

Online startups need help right now

You've got a great idea. You think you can make money with it online. You're prepared to invest time and money to make it happen, but you're not sure if it will work? Web Scraping can help. A web scraping service can search for data relevant to your idea and deliver a concise report on how many other sites are doing the same thing, what they charge, how long they've been doing it, etc. This is an invaluable tool to help you determine what your next step will be and what direction to take.

Going it alone

You've already started your online business. You're on your way toward developing your web presence. How do you buildup your web traffic? Start data mining to find your direction. Many people at this stage choose to go it alone and start web parsing on their own to save on expenses. Unless your super tech savvy, don't waste your time. A professional web scraping service can be set up to extract website data and deliver information to you before you can even figure out how to use that software you just downloaded. That's time you can spend doing other things - like taking a break.

It's working - Now what?

Your site has been up and running for awhile and you are seeing results. You've established a good web presence and your traffic is growing. You're starting to see some returns and you want more. Now what? Start marketing! BUT WAIT! Before you spend more time and money targeting future customers, find out who they are and how to reach them. In this critical step, a web scraping service will make all the difference. It can search out forums and social media websites where consumers post reviews about products and services similar to yours. It can show what they like to use and what they are spending their money on and where they go to do it. It can show you where to target your advertising dollars to maximize your returns.

Good business gets better

You're web presence is established. Customers come back for your product or service frequently and your profits reflect this. You've put in the effort and you've earned your position in the market. You've reached a comfortable level with your online business. Now is the time to take the next step. In order to go from good to better, you need to start really developing information about your competition and how your potential customers are responding to them. What are your competitors doing right? More importantly, what are they doing wrong? You already have your customer base, but why not solidify it and grow it. Data mining at this stage will show you how to improve your products or services. It will show you if your competition is making a mistake and how you can take advantage of it. It will help you tinker with your pricing and customer service to maximize customer loyalty. It will take you to the next level.

Collecting Data With Web Scrapers

There is a large amount of data available only through websites. However, as many people have found out, trying to copy data into a usable database or spreadsheet directly out of a website can be a tiring process. Data entry from internet sources can quickly become cost prohibitive as the required hours add up. Clearly, an automated method for collating information from HTML-based sites can offer huge management cost savings.

Web scrapers are programs that are able to aggregate information from the internet. They are capable of navigating the web, assessing the contents of a site, and then pulling data points and placing them into a structured, working database or spreadsheet. Many companies and services will use programs to web scrape, such as comparing prices, performing online research, or tracking changes to online content.

Let's take a look at how web scrapers can aid data collection and management for a variety of purposes.

Improving On Manual Entry Methods

Using a computer's copy and paste function or simply typing text from a site is extremely inefficient and costly. Web scrapers are able to navigate through a series of websites, make decisions on what is important data, and then copy the info into a structured database, spreadsheet, or other program. Software packages include the ability to record macros by having a user perform a routine once and then have the computer remember and automate those actions. Every user can effectively act as their own programmer to expand the capabilities to process websites. These applications can also interface with databases in order to automatically manage information as it is pulled from a website.

Aggregating Information

There are a number of instances where material stored in websites can be manipulated and stored. For example, a clothing company that is looking to bring their line of apparel to retailers can go online for the contact information of retailers in their area and then present that information to sales personnel to generate leads. Many businesses can perform market research on prices and product availability by analyzing online catalogues.

Data Management

Managing figures and numbers is best done through spreadsheets and databases; however, information on a website formatted with HTML is not readily accessible for such purposes. While websites are excellent for displaying facts and figures, they fall short when they need to be analyzed, sorted, or otherwise manipulated. Ultimately, web scrapers are able to take the output that is intended for display to a person and change it to numbers that can be used by a computer. Furthermore, by automating this process with software applications and macros, entry costs are severely reduced.

This type of data management is also effective at merging different information sources. If a company were to purchase research or statistical information, it could be scraped in order to format the information into a database. This is also highly effective at taking a legacy system's contents and incorporating them into today's systems.

Overall, a web scraper is a cost effective user tool for data manipulation and management.

Letters: Taking stock of Yelp's reviews

Yelp spokeswoman Kristen Whisenand "thinks it makes sense to give more credence to experienced reviewers; consumers have more confidence in those who are most prolific online."

Prolific Yelp reviewers certainly have experience in writing reviews, but Whisenand is mistaken that said experience equates with knowledgeable and discerning critiques. I for one am suspicious of reviewers who feel competent to comment on everything from knitting to diesel engine repair.

If Yelp's filters are meant to weed out suspect reviews, one wonders why Whisenand's self-serving review of Yelp was itself not filtered out.

The major problem with negative restaurant reviews on Yelp is that they're written based on one-time experiences. A professional restaurant critic dines at a restaurant several times before writing a review. Furthermore, some negative critiques on Yelp are written in such a sophomoric fashion that it is difficult to take them seriously.

If a food item is accented with garlic, the eatery doesn't deserve a one-star rating based on a customer's distaste for that plant. Conversely, if a patron enjoys a fabulous one-time dining experience, a hasty five-star rating would be undeserved as well.

As the Latin saying goes, de gustibus non est desputandum — in matters of taste, there are no disputes.
